College Planning and Consumer Tips for the New Year

January 1, 2008

Dear Friends and Family,

Happy New Year!

We hope your new year is filled with peace, joy, health, happiness, friendship, warmth, hope, prosperity, goodwill, and harmony!

With the new year upon us, we feel it is a good time to review your college planning strategies. Our goal is to educate you! We will be holding our College Planning Seminars during the month of February in Maryland and Virginia. In the meantime, during our monthly call, we will be reviewing any existing education savings accounts you have with us. If you have any accounts held elsewhere, please feel free to fax or mail your account statements — we will be happy to review them.

Here are a few facts that may surprise you and prompt you to start planning for college:

  • Less than 2% of college-bound students receive scholarships, so planning ahead to save for college is vital for most families.
  • Colleges expect a child to contribute 35% of the assets in his or her own name to cover college expenses, while parents are expected to contribute less than 6% of theirs.
  • Beginning January 2008, the Kiddie Tax age will be extended to include children under 19 and full-time support students under 24, whose earned income does not exceed one-half of their support.

A reminder for everyone: the Do-Not-Call list is expiring. If you signed up for the national Do-Not-Call registry in 2003, you will need to renew your spot on the list. You might also want to remove your address from junk mail lists.

  • The Do-Not-Call registry is managed and enforced by the Federal Trade Commission. Register online at www.donotcall.gov or call 1-888-382-1222. You must call from the phone number you wish to register.
  • Remove your address from marketers’ lists online at www.dmaconsumers.org or by writing to DMA’s Mail Preference Service, P.O. Box 282, Carmel, NY 10512.

In our Issaquah office, we will be offering a Small Business Owners and Outsourcing HR Seminar on January 24th at noon. Please call Vicki for details and to reserve a lunch. We hope you can attend!

Sincerely,

Katz Family Financial
